<<BROWSE HELP>>
You can display information for each card in the
set by selecting the "Next" and/or "Previous"
pushbuttons. Select the "PgDn" and "PgUp"
pushbuttons to skip forward or backward 10 cards.
If you have defined any of the three optional
flags, you can also select the corresponding
pushbuttons at the bottom of the window to mark
or unmark the currently displayed card with any
of these flags. Otherwise, these buttons will be
dimmed and cannot be selected.
To select a pushbutton with a mouse, simply click
on the button. To select a pushbutton from the
keyboard, you can use the following keys:
<Alt-N> - Displays the next card in set
<Alt-P> - Displays the previous card
<PgDn> - Skips forward 10 cards
<PgUp> - Skips backward 10 cards
To toggle any of the optional flags, press the
TAB key repeatedly until the correct button is
highlighted and then press ENTER.
As each card is selected, S.C.I.M. will show the
name and number of the card as well as the values
and quantities for each card grade. The box in
the upper right portion of the window shows which
of the flags apply to the card. The check boxes
in this area are for display only and cannot be
selected.
You can also use the menu bar at the top of the
screen to search, edit, and report on this set.
<<EXIT SET>>
Select "Ok" to exit this set. Any changes that
you have made to quantities, names, flags, and
card values will be lost. Select "Cancel" to
continue editing the current set.

let you create a report that shows only the cards
that are marked with any or all of these flags.

<<VALIDYEAR HELP>>
Enter a valid range of years to be covered by the
report. The second year must be no earlier than
the first year.
<<VALIDTYPE HELP>>
You must select at least one sport to be included
in the report.
<<NOTLOGGED HELP>>
Before using a custom set that was not created
within the system, you must inform the program of
the new set by selecting the "Log a Custom Set"
option of the Sets menu.
<<CUSTOMSET HELP>>
Enter the name of a custom set. If this set has
already been created, it will be loaded so that
you can access it as you would any other. You
can also select a set from the list box.
If you want to create a new set, enter the name
that you will use for the set. This name must be
a valid DOS filename.
<<BADCREATE HELP>>
S.C.I.M. was not able to create this custom set.
The most likely cause for this error is that you
selected an invalid name for the new set. The
name of each custom set must be a valid DOS
filename.
<<SETTOLOG HELP>>
You can use this option to automatically add
additional custom sets without having to manually
enter the data for each card in the sets. Simply
enter the filename and select the "Ok" button.
The program will then check the data directory to
ensure that the file exists. If the file exists,
it will be automatically logged into the system.
You can then access the set as you would any
custom set.
<<PLAYERREP HELP>>
This report shows the year, brand, quantities for
each grade, and the total value for the card that
you specify. Enter the following fields:
Player - Use this field to specify the card name.
This name must precisely match the name of the
card as it appears in a given set.
Range of Years - Enter a range of years that will
be covered by the report. The second year can be
no earlier than the first year.
Lastly, select a radio button to indicate which
sport the report is to cover. This report can
only be directed to the printer.
<<VALIDCRD HELP>>
You must enter a beginning and ending card number
for the report. The beginning number must be no
greater than the ending number.

<<GETSET HELP>>

pressing the TAB key repeatedly or with a single
mouse click).
You can select sets other than those included
with S.C.I.M. by selecting "*** CUSTOM SET ***"
from the list box on the right portion of the
screen. Any year that you have entered will then
be ignored.

to include in the report. Only those brands that
match the sport(s) that you chose will actually
be included.
<<VALIDSETS HELP>>
Select the check box for each brand that you want
to include in the report. Only those brands that
match the sport(s) that you chose will actually
be included. You must select at least one brand.
<<NOFILES HELP>>
No valid data files were found in your data
directory. The most likely cause of this error
is that an incorrect data directory was entered
in the "Change Configuration" function.
<<NUMSEARCH HELP>>
Enter the number of a card that you want to find.
If an exact match is found, data for this card
will be displayed.
<<NAMESRCH HELP>>
Enter a search string. When the program finds
the next card name containing this string, it
will display the data for that card. It is not
necessary for an exact match to exist - any card
containing the search string will be displayed.
<<MQUERASC HELP>>
Select "Ok" to create an ASCII file in your data
directory. This file will have the same name as
the data file for the current set, but with a
".FIL" extension.
<<MNAME HELP>>
Enter a new name for the currently displayed card
or select "Cancel" to continue without changing
the card name.
<<PRSCREEN HELP>>
Enter a new mint card value for the currently
displayed card or select "Cancel" to continue
without changing the current value. Values for
the other grades will be updated automatically.
<<NUMSCR HELP>>
You can change the quantity for any or all grades
in either of two ways. You can simply enter the
new quantity directly. Or, you can use the gray
plus (+) and gray minus (-) keys to increase and
decrease the currently selected quantity.
<<CUSTDELDEF HELP>>
Use this function to delete a custom set. Type
the name of the set to be deleted directly into
the entry field or select the set from the list

<<PERSCREE HELP>>
S.C.I.M. uses values for six card grades. For a
given card, however, only the mint card value is
of any significance in itself. Each set assigns
a specific percentage of this value to each of
the remaining grades.
You can use this window to make changes for any
or all card grades. If you do make changes, all
card values for this set will be determined by
the newly entered percentages.
<<SELECTDEF HELP>>
This function lets you easily identify any card
whose mint value matches or exceeds a specified
value, or those marked as rookie or special
cards. There is also an option to actually add
these cards to your collection. You can enter
the following fields:
Minimum Value - The program will select all cards
with a mint card value equal to or greater than
the value entered here. You can leave this field
set at 0.00 if you want to identify only rookie
and/or special cards.
Keep Rookie Cards - Select this check box if you
want S.C.I.M. to identify each rookie card for
you.
Keep Special Cards - Select this check box if you
want S.C.I.M. to identify each special card for
you.
Change Quantities - If you select this check box,
the "Change Quantity" window is opened each time
a matching card is found so that you can add the
card to your collection.
Card Number - After specifying the appropriate
criteria, you can enter each card number in this
field.
As you enter each card number, the card name and
mint value are displayed in the box at the right
of the window. For each matching card, the
program displays the message "Keep This Card"
unless you have selected the "Change Quantities"
check box. If you have selected the "Change
Quantities" box, another window is opened so that
you can add the card to your collection as
described for the "Change Quantity" function.
<<CONFIG HELP>>
You will need to use this function at least once
when first installing the program. Thereafter,
you can use this function as often as needed to
change any of the specified data. Enter each of
the following fields:
Data Drive and Path - Specify the disk drive
and the path to the directory that will contain
your data files. This entry must contain a
single drive letter and a colon followed by a
valid, absolute DOS path. That is, this path
must already exist and must begin and end with
a backslash (\).
Flag <1,2,3> Name:You can use as many as 3
flags to identify cards that are important to
you in some way (This is in addition to those
cards marked as Rookie, Special, or Common
cards). Use these fields to specify the titles
that you will use to identify these cards. You
will then be able to create reports listing
only those cards marked with these flags.
Compress/Normal Print:You can use these fields
to specify the control sequences that switch
compress print mode on and off. Each sequence
may include up to five decimal ASCII codes.
Most printers will not use all of the spaces.
You can leave the leftover spaces set to zero.
You can also select the "Colors" pushbutton to
change the screen colors. Some color schemes may
only be suitable for EGA/VGA displays. If your
system does not conform to these standards, you
will have to select one of the remaining schemes.
<<BADPATH HELP>>
An invalid data directory was entered. The entry
must contain a single drive letter and a colon
followed by a valid, absolute DOS path. That is,
the path must already exist and must begin and
end with a backslash (\).
<<PULLDOWN HELP>>
The menu bar allows you to activate most of the
program's functions. This feature will operate
differently, depending on whether you use a mouse
or your keyboard. To use the menu bar with a
mouse:
1. Place the mouse pointer on any menu bar item
and CLICK to select the menu box for that item.
2. Place the mouse pointer on the function that
you want to activate and CLICK to execute that
function.
To use the menu bar with the keyboard:
1. Activate any menu box by pressing the ALT
key in combination with the first letter of any
menu bar item. For example, you would activate
the "Reports" menu box by pressing <ALT-R>.
2. Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to position
the highlight bar over the desired menu item
and press ENTER to execute that function. You
can also execute the function by pressing the
menu item's highlighted letter. Use the LEFT
and RIGHT arrow keys to move from one menu box
to another.
After you make a selection from a menu box, a
program window will usually be opened. You will
then still be able to activate the menu bar, but
all menu items except for the "Help" item will
usually be disabled.
